In the second half of the 19th century, Alicante planned its urban expansion, taking as an example Ildefonso Cerdá’s Eixample in Barcelona. Two large avenues were built and at their intersection the middle space has become one of the most emblematic points of the city.

In 1908, the square was named Plaza de la Independencia, to mark the first centenary of the Dos de Mayo uprising. Today, the square houses one of the city’s most emblematic fountains. It was built in 1930 by Alicante-born Daniel Bañuls. The construction of the Fuente de Levante was completed in May of the following year and in 1934 the City Council agreed to change the name of the square. From that year until 1939, the Plaza de la Independencia was named Plaza de Cataluña. At the beginning of the 1940s, the square changed its name again. This time, in reference to a verse of the “Cara al sol”, the Plaza de los Luceros was adopted as the definitive name, despite attempts to change the name during the transition.

Since then, the Plaza de los Luceros has become one of the most representative places in the city. The fountain consists of several figures and images, among which the four horses and the figure of an elf under their feet stand out. The author himself explained during the construction of the fountain that the elements that form it have a purely decorative character.

Likewise, all the main commercial and leisure arteries of the city branch out from Luceros. Some of them host important events such as the Alicante Book Fair.

Main point of the party

Since its construction, Plaza de los Luceros has become the epicentre for the city’s most important festivals. Luceros hosts the mascletás of the Hogueras de San Juan, as well as the start of all the parades of these festivities. In turn, the Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos has its point of origin at the confluence of Avenida de la Estación and Luceros.

You’ve seen it! Plaza de los Luceros is a reference point in the daily life of the people of Alicante who walk around the square every day. So, put aside your routine and come to this place with a different objective: to enjoy a pleasant walk in which to observe the grandeur of a square from the last century. Are you coming?
